Waterborne vs solvent-borne industrial coatings: how to choose

2026-03-22

A buyer's guide to trade-offs between low-VOC waterborne systems and traditional solvent-borne coatings.

waterborneVOCsustainability

1. Regulatory Drivers

Tighter VOC limits, worker-safety rules, and export requirements (especially to the EU) are pushing specifiers toward low-VOC waterborne systems. Indoor or occupied sites benefit most from the low odor and fast re-occupancy.

2. Performance Trade-offs

Waterborne coatings cure best between 5–35°C and need controlled humidity; they offer low odor and easy cleanup. Solvent-borne grades tolerate wider temperatures, build thicker films, and remain the choice for immersion and C5-M heavy-duty service.

3. When to Choose Which

Use waterborne primers/topcoats for structural steel, equipment, and export projects where VOC and safety matter. Reserve solvent-borne zinc-rich and fluorocarbon systems for immersed, marine, or very-high-durability exposure.

4. Our Approach

NANTE COATINGS runs a full waterborne range (primer, MIO intermediate, PU and fluorocarbon topcoats, acrylic) plus solvent-borne flagships for the heaviest duties — so the same supplier can cover both regimes.
