1. The 80/20 Rule
Most premature coating failures are not caused by the paint but by poor surface preparation. Cleaning and profiling the substrate is the single highest-leverage step in any project.
2. Cleanliness and Profile
For high-performance systems, blast to Sa 2.5 (near-white) and control the anchor profile to roughly 40–70 µm. Too shallow a profile weakens adhesion; too deep wastes coating and traps residue.
3. Ambient Limits
Never coat below the dew point; keep surface temperature at least 3°C above dew point and relative humidity below 85%. Condensation under the film causes blistering and flash rust.
4. Verification Tools
Use a profile gauge, surface thermometer, and salt-contamination (Bresle) test. Recording these on every shift turns preparation from folklore into a controlled process.
