Coating selection for marine and bridge structures (ISO 12944 C5-M)

2026-02-15

Designing a C5-M compliant anti-corrosion stack for high-salinity, high-humidity infrastructure.

marineC5-Mzinc-richfluorocarbon

1. Why C5-M

Coastal and offshore structures face salt-laden air, high humidity, and daily thermal cycling. C5-M (very high corrosivity, marine) demands a robust, validated system rather than a generic primer.

2. A Proven Stack

A typical C5-M build is 80% zinc-rich epoxy primer + MIO epoxy intermediate + fluorocarbon or PU topcoat, with total DFT around 280–320 µm. The zinc primer gives cathodic protection; MIO adds barrier; the topcoat locks in weathering resistance.

3. Standards and Proof

Require evidence: salt-spray resistance of 3000 h or more, cyclic-corrosion testing, and adhesion data. Ask suppliers for the full TDS/SDS and inter-coat compatibility notes.

4. Field Notes

Pilot references on rail spans and North-Sea terminal handling areas show stable performance under continuous salt exposure when the system and surface prep are correctly specified.
